Velehrad Monastery is a former Cistercian monastery located in southern Moravia in the village of Velehrad, about 6 km from Staré Město near Uherské Hradiště. The monastery was founded at the beginning of the 13th century by the Moravian Margrave Vladislav Jindřich and is thus the oldest Cistercian monastery in Moravia.
The monastery was founded at the beginning of the 13th century by the Moravian Margrave Vladislav Jindřich and is thus the oldest Cistercian monastery in Moravia.
It was built in the Romanesque style, with early Gothic influences, and consecrated in the presence of Přemysl Otakar I on November 27, 1228.
Milestones in the monastery's history include its burning by the Moravian Hussites in 1421 and a fire in 1681.
The monastery got its name based on its location. Over time, it became the bearer of a spiritual tradition dating back to the 9th century, when the Slavic missionaries Constantine and Methodius came to Moravia.
Today, it is an important spiritual center, a place of church gatherings, pilgrimages, and Cyril and Methodius celebrations. The main Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage takes place every year on July 5, the feast day of Cyril and Methodius.
